‘Stand By Me’ by Ben E. King
R&B song and 1984 cinematic classic are everlasting monuments to togetherness in their own right. Even if we’re confronted by a knife-wielding Kiefer Sutherland while looking for a dead corpse, we know we’ll be fine as long as our buddies are right there at our sides.
‘All My Friends’ by LCD Soundsystem
Is it more melancholic than that? This is James Murphy’s elegy for the loyal friends who give up years of their lives for a drug-fueled rampage in the wee hours of the morning to attend the rave? A surefire indie dance floor crusher, any way.
‘Best Friend’ by Harry Nilsson
Everyone has had the sensation of having a new buddy who you just can’t stop talking about. Even though the original, ‘Girlfriend,’ was released on an album, Harry Nilsson limited this rendition to becoming the theme song of TV’s The Courtship of Eddie’s Father for a long time without an official release.
‘Thank You for Being a Friend’ by Andrew Gold
Gold’s composition stands alone as a timeless ode to friendship and thanks, even if it’s a perfect fit for the Golden Girls’ theme song. Let your buddy know how much you adore them (or play Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia with your squad) with this one!
“You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman
While Toy Story may have sparked your interest in this song, it’s appropriate for all ages. When life gets tough, it’s good to know that your closest friends will be there for you.
“You’re My Best Friend” by Queen
Sweet/fun fact: John Deacon’s wife was the inspiration for this song. Isn’t it wonderful when the person you’re dating happens to be your best friend?
“The Boys Are Back in Town” by Thin Lizzy
I don’t mean to be a jerk, but this song is best appreciated when you and your buddies have all moved away and returned to your hometown for a holiday or other get-together and re-enacted your old antics. Sigh.
“Flowers (Sunship Edit)” by Sweet Female Attitude
Sweet Female Attitude’s “Flowers (Sunship Edit)” didn’t need to convince me to listen to their music in the first place. “I’ll bring you flowers, I’ll make your day / The tears you shed, I’ll dry them all.”
“No New Friends” by DJ Khaled feat. Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne
2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Drake as he prepares to crossover from R&B to hard-core rap, but is still very much in his comfort zone. As Drake takes himself a little too seriously, but in an adorable manner, he vows his commitment to his “day ones” and no one else in “No New Friends.”
“Wannabe” by Spice Girls
Because of the Spice Girls, the statement “Get with my pals if you want to be my lover” has become immortalized. In addition to being a pop anthem, “Wannabe” worked because every young girl wanted to be part of the Spice Girls’ camaraderie (and tracksuits).
